Opera in the Schools Outreach Program

Coordinator/Director: Jennifer Seiger

Pianists:  June Burbage and Kate Lewis

Capital Opera has is now in its fourth season of bringing the world of opera into the classroom. As this season draws to a close, over 20,000 students will have been introduced to the art form--many for the first time. Our most-performed program--a condensed version of the fairytale Hansel and Gretel set by Engelbert Humperdinck--is best-suited to the K-5 audience. In addition to this program, Capital Opera is working to develop a new opera for children, tying in with the folk-tale/fairytale aspect of the elementary school curriculum. Opera 101--an introduction to the art form featuring "opera's greatest hits"-- is a great program for the middle-school audience, but can also be tailored to the needs of a K-5 or high school audience. In this program, the use of opera in film, television and marketing is highlighted and students have the opportunity to sing along and provide interaction and direction for the program itself.

A program specific to high-school audiences is in development which will focus on the use of great literature (especially Shakespeare) in opera. Check back for details soon. Capital Opera is looking forward to our next season with United Arts Artist-in-the-Schools program bringing schoolchildren in Wake County and across the triangle the joys of opera!
